Youth soccer players dream of scoring the winning goal for their soccer team, whether it's a club team or a varsity school team. They watch TV commercials and read magazine advertisings for all the latest and fastest soccer shoes. These shoes are all worn by the elite soccer players in the world. " Wear these soccer shoes and play like Dave Beckham!" the commercial states , hearing this your child instantly feels the new high tech soccer shoes will make them a soccer star.
There are different playing field surfaces to consider when choosing a pair of shoes. Will the player be playing on a grass field? Is it an artificial grass field and what type? Wet or dry conditions will also affect the playing surface. It's very important to choose the right soccer shoe for the right field surface and conditions to avoid Slips and injuries.
The proper soccer shoes for grass, dirt fields are call "firm Ground" cleats. These come with different cleat patterns. Bladed studs are shaped like a blade, to cut into the ground. Sometimes they contain round studs or a combination of blades and round. Sometimes the playing surfaces are hard compacted dirt, here it's recommended to wear Hard Ground Cleats consisting of round short cleats, made to wear longer on the hard surfaces.
Indoor soccer shoes are worn on artificial playing fields or indoor gyms. The soles are made of a rubber gum material to increase traction on the hard surfaces. The soles may contain a ribbed or herring bone pattern to increase the grip. The rules for wearing turf shoes on artificial playing fields will vary depending on the policy of the owner of the field. Cleated shoes will increase the wear and tear on a playing field so many facilities require turf shoes. They also may be worn as street wear or casual everyday shoes.
Training shoes are more supportive than game shoes, usually just like a basketball shoe. These should be worn when weightlifting, running, or doing conditioning drills.
While it’s important to choose the right type of shoe for the field conditions, it’s also important to choose the right kind depending on your position. Light speed shoes are recommended for strikers and middies while heavier supportive shoes are recommended for defensemen.
Choosing the right size is very important, nothing is worse than a pair of sore feet covered in blisters. Soccer shoes should fit snugly with no more than 1/2" of space between your toes and the tip of the shoes. If your shoes are made of leather, remember that they will stretch after being worn. Youth players will outgrow their shoes before they will wear-out.
Having several soccer shoes in your locker or bag is the best way to go, so you’re always ready for anything. Budgets are always are important consideration. Is it better to have one pair of the flashiest and newest or several last year models bought for 50-70% off retail? While new soccer shoes may improve your game, the best way to improve is through training and skill development.
